More Plastics and Cartons Now Collected

Plastics3

The new automated recycling service now allows Fridley residents the ability to recycle more plastic items. All plastic containers (except Styrofoam) #1-7 are now being accepted, including caps and lids. This includes things like margarine tubs and yogurt containers. Even clear deli, fruit, and bakery plastic containers can be recycled. Plastic shopping bags are also being added. It works best for the collector's sorting line if you put a bunch of bags inside one bag (like the picture shows) when placing them in your recycling cart. Plastic caps can now be left of the bottle. Paper milk and juice cartons are also being added to the service, as well as aseptic juice, broth and soup boxes. Plastic containers up to the size of an ice cream pail can be placed in your cart, but not containers that are larger. If you have questions about what plastic items can be recycled, call Allied Waste Services at 952-941-5174.

Fridley Area Cancer Rate Lower Than Previously Reported

The Minnesota Department of Health has posted a news release showing that, "Further review of Fridley area cancer data shows overall cancer rate is 7.6 percent, not 10 percent, above state average."  The news release goes on to show where these new numbers come from, and explains that many of the cases are lung cancer, possibly related to the higher smoking rate for the area.

Water Quality

glass-of-water2Concerns About Cancer Risk and Fridley Drinking Water

Introduction

Data recently provided by the Minnesota Department of Health indicated about a 10% higher rate of cancer reported from several Fridley census tracts greater than those reported on average in Minnesota. The data for this cancer rate were collected between 2000 and 2009. There are many factors that can affect a cancer rate in any community. The age of the population and smoking rates are two of the biggest variables.

Some recent concerns have been expressed whether higher cancer rates have a connection to the City of Fridley water supply. The cancer data provided by the Minnesota Department of Health does not indicate drinking water in Fridley as a source of environmental exposure.

The Minnesota Department of Health regularly monitors water quality produced by City of Fridley wells and plants as part of the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. The City of Fridley has never had a violation of these standards for cancer causing agents.
