Hydrant flushing begins Monday, April 17. As we move throughout the city, we anticipate it to last approximately 2 weeks.
No reason to be alarmed at water gushing down Fridley streets over the next couple weeks. Spring hydrant flushing is expected to last through the end of the month. We do this twice a year (spring and fall) in order to clear the water mains of small amounts of sediment, like iron or manganese, that settle over time. We also verify that all hydrants in the city are in good working order.
During flushing, deposits from water lines may create a yellowish to brownish discoloration of water in homes near the flushing area. While this water is safe for drinking, it may discolor laundry. If discoloration lasts longer than two days, call us at (763) 572-3566. You may also call this number for current flushing locations and area specific timing.
