Locke Lake Recreational Use Advisory Lifted Print E-mail

After consultation with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the advisory against recreational use of Locke Lake has been lifted.  MPCA believes that ultimately very little diesel fuel actually reached the water, with the bulk of what leaked out of one engine being contained in the road bed and surrounding soil.  The second engine's tanks were not breached and did not leak any diesel.  MPCA examined the scum that accumulated along the lake shore and found that to be mostly corn dust.  They believe it contained just enough diesel fuel in places to give it that odor.  The booms have been removed from the lake.  If you do find any accumulations of diesel fuel in the water or along the shoreline, please contact Capt. Brian Weierke in the Fridley Police Department/Emergency Management at 763-572-3632 and we will pass that information along to MPCA.  It is BNSF's responsibility to restore the lake and adjacent properties to pre-incicent state and MPCA can insure that happens.

This will likely be the last update posted regarding this incident.  Thanks to all for your patience and understanding as the City and BNSF worked together to recover from this calamity.
