FUND FOR THE PUBLIC INTEREST, INC has registered to conduct solicitations and canvassing in the City as a charitable organization. The Police Department wishes to remind residents that registration is not an endorsement of the organization.
While commercial soliciting and canvassing requires an application and permit process, government restrictions on religious and political canvassing are unconstitutional under the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
Just because someone knocks on your door doesn't mean you are required to open it. The decision whether to open your door to strangers and to support door-to-door solicitors/canvassers is ultimately a personal one. The Fridley Police Department recommends that if you in any way doubt the credibility of a solicitor/canvasser, feel threatened or intimidated by his or her actions, or experience strong-armed or deceptive tactics, YOU HAVE A RIGHT to ask the person to leave. DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL 9-1-1 to report activity that makes you feel unsafe.
