[ARCHIVED] Holiday Waste: Recycle!

The holidays can mean lots of extra waste around the house. Make environmentally-friendly decisions with these few helpful tips!

Let's start with the tree: If you decorate your home with a live holiday tree, bring it to Bunker Hills Compost site when the season is over. It's illegal to put your Christmas tree in the garbage anyway, and composted trees are turned into great mulch and soil additives. Remember to remove all decorations and lights. Bunker Hills Compost Site is open for 2 weekends after New Year's Day to accept trees and boughs, as well as yard waste like branches. A modest fee is charged. The compost site is located at 13285 Hanson Blvd in Coon Rapids. Questions on fees, hours, directions and acceptable items: Give them a call at (763) 767-7964.

Did You Know...? Garbage has more fees on service; recycling is cheaper! Many holiday traditions are celebrated in December and those family gatherings tend to be garbage-filled affairs! Your pocketbook gets hit hard when you don't take the time to separate real recyclables from garbage. In fact, you pay 9.75% in state taxes on garbage, including any recyclables you forgot to pull out. Recyclables are not taxed and, when fully used, you save money and create jobs in our community. FYI - Fridley has slipped to only about 75% of households participating. Let's work together to recycle more!

Be Green this Holiday! Aim for a no-waste holiday this year by giving gifts with reusable bags instead of wrapping paper, or use gift wrap made from recycled content. Make your holiday party green and look for opportunities to recycle containers and plastics along with broken holiday lights and electrical cords. You can even drop off those holiday lights and cords in a box in the lobby of Fridley City Hall, 6431 University Avenue NE.
